Participation in housework and weekly hours of housework: predictions from a two-part model, by sex and level of son preference

No son preference (ideal proportion ≤ 0.5) Son preference (ideal proportion > 0.5)

Boy Girl Girl–Boy Boy Girl Girl–Boy
Stage 1: probability of performing housework 0.50 0.67 0.17 0.49 0.85 0.36
Stage 2: hours of housework, among those with positive hours 7.54 9.53 1.99 7.62 10.00 2.38
Stage 1 and 2 combined: predicted hours of housework 4.46 7.45 2.99 4.41 8.76 4.34

Source Predictions based on a two-stage model: (1) random-effects logistic model of participation in housework among all children (N = 80,678, Groups = 3,847) (xtmelogit in Stata); (2) random-effects log-normal model of hours of work among those with positive hours (N = 45,397, Groups = 3,722) (xtmixed in Stata). The coefficients for the interaction SP * Girl in each stage are 0.319 and 0.031 both significant at 1 % level. Complete estimates are available in the supplementary material Appendix. The models include all mother and children’s characteristics, state characteristic, and regional and religious controls as in column (5) of Table 2
