The subunit composition of the polycomb repressive complex (PRC1) is responsible for the balance between self-renewal and differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells. Cbx7 and Cbx8 compete for integration into the PRC1 complex. While Cbx7 inhibits HSC differentiation and induces self-renewal, Cbx8 has the opposite effect. Interaction types indicate ‘is part of’ (red arrow), ‘increase activity’ (green arrow), ‘affects activity’ (open green arrow), ‘increase expression’ (black arrow) and ‘interacts’ (red line).
