Figure 4. Deleting virulence factors from EAEC 042 slows C. elegans killing.

Figure 4

Nematode slow-kill virulence assays on NGM agar. The ability of EAEC 042, (A) 042 Δaat, (B) 042 ΔaggR, 042 ΔaggR+pBADaggR, (C) 042 Δpet and 042 Δpet+pCEFN1 to kill the nematode worm C. elegans was examined over a 10 day period. Error bars represent +/− standard error. The 042 ΔaggR (LT50: 5.2, P<0.001) and 042 Δpet (LT50: 4.29, P<0.05) strains had significantly higher LT50 than the 042 wildtype (LT50: 3.1). Complementation of these genes via pBADaggR (LT50: 3.4) or pCEFN1 (LT50: 3.6) restored the LT50 to wildtype levels. The 042 Δaat strain had an LT50 similar to wildtype (LT50: 2.9).
