Average apoptosis levels scored in various genetic combinations. (a) In the double mutants syp-2;msh-5, apoptosis is reduced at the same level of syp-2, spo-11, and syp-2;cep-1 double mutants, suggesting that DNA damage-induced apoptosis, but not apoptosis due to synapsis defects, is msh-5 dependent.
