2004 World Health Organization terminology for severity: Category I = touching or licking by the animal on intact skin; Category II = minor scratches or abrasions without bleeding or being licked by the animal on broken skin; Category III = transdermal bites or scratches, or contamination of mucous membranes with saliva.20
