Enrichment of tDMR CpGs in genes that are preferentially expressed in studied tissues. Differential methylation of a non-CGI proximal promoter was strongly associated with tissue-specific expression (TiGER database [17]) of the adjacent gene and much more so than for differentially methylated CGI proximal promoters. tDMR CpGs were significantly enriched in all tissues in both proximal promoters with an island and proximal promoters without a CpG island (P < 10^-5).
