Effect of bacteria on basolateral release of TGF-β by polarized rat uterine epithelial cells. Uterine epithelial cells cultured in RPMI medium in Falcon cell culture inserts were treated apically with live E. coli (A) or live L. rhamnosus (B) in saline and incubated for 24 h. Following collection of basolateral media, levels of biologically active TGF-β were determined by bioassay as described in Materials and Methods.
