Experimental setup for conducting in vivo experiments. For imaging, a coronal slice including the injury site was selected, exposing regions such as the somatosensory cortex, the hippocampus, and the thalamus. Regions for which results were reported are defined as the region of impact (surrounded by dotted line at upper right, consisting of the somatosensory cortex and part of the hippocampus of the injured hemisphere) and the region away from impact (surrounded by dotted line, consisting of the rest of the brain). These two regions of interest (ROIs) were selected for every mouse, whether it was injured or not.
