Scheme of general mechanism of oxidation reaction. Step 1 is an initiation that involves generation of free radicals. Step 2 (proliferation) is an increase in the number of free radicals by a series of reactions with oxygen in the surrounding polymer. Step 3 is a transfer of free radicals to different sites in the polymer chain. Finally, the break-up occurs, leading to formation of new chain ends.
