C. burnetii secretion substrates target distinct subcellular compartments when ectopically expressed in HeLa cells. Each T4SS substrate was expressed as a C-terminal fusion to EGFP and used for transfection of HeLa cells. (A) A diffuse cytoplasmic signal that excluded the nuclei (Cbu2059) or colocalization with the nucleus (Cbu0393 and Cbu0388) could be demonstrated.
