Comparison of configurations for a quintuply twisted strip. (A) Ground-state configuration consisting of five small disclinations loops at the locations predicted by [1]. They have a slightly twisted profile, caused by both the twisting of the strip and the chiral nature of the system. (B) A Inline graphic torus knot entangling the strip, with two hyperbolic hedgehogs nucleated above and below. The energy difference between these configurations is ∼1.2%.
