A schematic illustration of the photoreceptor disc purification procedure employed in this study. D1 preparation was obtained from osmotically shocked bovine rod outer segments; D2 was obtained by subjecting D1 to a centrifugation step on a linear Ficoll gradient; D3 was obtained by immunoprecipitating D2 with anti-peripherin antibodies. Discs and are marked in red. The number of proteins confidently identified by mass spectrometry in each disc preparation is indicated at the bottom.
