Vicarious trial and error (VTE) was driven by behavioral flexibility. zIdPhi was uniformly low for alternation laps, no matter how frequently they occurred within a 10-lap sliding window. In contrast, zIdPhi was higher during adjustment laps, particularly when they occurred in the midst of alternation laps, indicating that VTE is more likely to occur during isolated adjustment laps, rather than during groups of consecutive adjustment laps
