Photomicrographs of Nissl stained facial motor neurons in WT and RAG2-KO mice that received nerve reinjury or sham reinjury (3 days or 28 days). The facial motor nucleus is oriented so that the medial sub-nucleus is located on the right. There was a significant loss and shrinkage of neurons in WT and RAG2-KO mice that received a chronic resection + sham injury (3 days or 28 days; B, E, H and K) compared to their respective contralateral controls (A, D, G and J). Following nerve reinjury, the number and size of injured motor neurons were markedly increased in WT mice (3 days and 28 days; C and I), whereas there was a increase of neuron size but not in neuron number in RAG2-KO mice (3 days and 28 days; F and L).
