Transplantation of pancreatic islets into the anterior chamber of the eye is a relatively simple and minimally invasive procedure. Isolated pancreatic islets are deposited on top of the iris through a small incision in the cornea of an anesthetized mouse. The islets are inserted into the anterior chamber using a small cannula. Once inside the anterior chamber, the islets adhere quickly to the iris where engraftment begins. Engrafted islets are revascularized and reinnervated similar to the native pancreas.
