Hypothetical cortical thickness developmental trajectory of affected regions in Rolandic epilepsy compared to healthy controls. The normal developmental trajectory follows an inverted U-shaped curve, wherein initial cortical thickening is followed by cortical thinning. In RE, several regions display both reduced cortical thickness and aberrantly early onset of cortical thinning (at or even before 8 years of age), other regions show one of these effects separately, see Fig. 2.
