K5+ olfactory progenitor cells are abundantly present in IOI-TNFR2−/− mice after chronic TNF-α expression. A: The K5+ cell population (horizontal basal cells) are normally present as a uniform single layer of immediately above the basal lamina. B: In IOI mice expressing TNF-α for 6 weeks, there is a near complete absence of K5 expression in the markedly thinned olfactory epithelium. C: In IOI-TNFR2−/− mice, horizontal basal cells are not only present, but appear to be in multiple layers with heterogeneous cell sizes.
