(a) Polymerized and free clathin concentrations, CP = CC1 and C1 (mg/ml), obtained by solving Eq. 10 for b = bs = 21.15 kBT, h = hs = 335 kBT, and n = ns = 90 as a function of C. Triskelion “monomer” at a concentration of 10−6 M corresponds to approximately 0.6 mg/ml clathrin. Here, CP represents the concentration of triskelions in clathrin baskets, and C1 is the free clathrin remaining in solution. CC ≈ 0.02 mg/ml is the critical concentration. Note that C1 is approximately equal to CC when C ≫ CC (c.f. Tanford24 and Israelachvili25).
