Diagnostic Criteria for Certain Respiratory Complications

Respiratory failure: type 1 - PaO2 < 8kPa (60 mm Hg), PaCO2 <6.6kPa (50 mm Hg) type 2 - PaO2 < 8kPa (60 mm Hg), PaCO2 >6.6kPa (50 mm Hg)

Atelectasis: pulmonary collapse clinically or on x-ray which may be subsegmental, segmental, lobar or pulmonary, without evidence of respiratory infection

Respiratory infection:Any two of the following on two or more days: pyrexia > 38°C positive sputum culture positive clinical findings abnormal chest x-ray - atelectasis/infiltrates

ARDS: acute onset bilateral infiltrates on chest x-ray if PaO2 (kPa) / FiO2 is ≤ 26
