Diagnostic Criteria for Certain Respiratory Complications

Respiratory failure:
  • type 1 - PaO2 < 8kPa (60 mm Hg), PaCO2 <6.6kPa (50 mm Hg)

  • type 2 - PaO2 < 8kPa (60 mm Hg), PaCO2 >6.6kPa (50 mm Hg)

Atelectasis:
  • pulmonary collapse clinically or on x-ray which may be subsegmental, segmental, lobar or pulmonary, without evidence of respiratory infection

Respiratory infection:Any two of the following on two or more days:
  • pyrexia > 38°C

  • positive sputum culture

  • positive clinical findings

  • abnormal chest x-ray - atelectasis/infiltrates

ARDS:
  • acute onset

  • bilateral infiltrates on chest x-ray

  • if PaO2 (kPa) / FiO2 is ≤ 26
