The system is scaled so that it corresponds to 1 g tissue. The units of the blood flow Q are milliliter per minute, the mixing ratio F is unit free, and the concentrations are given in micromoles per milliliter. The flux values are expressed in micromoles per minute. In the table, “estimated” means that the quantity is included in the list of unknowns and estimated together with the flux values. Observe that the formula for rj above for oxygen and carbon dioxide refers to concentrations of free gases, and a conversion from bound to free needs to be performed [see, e.g., Ref. (51)].
