The ordinate corresponds to free energy; the abscissa is a projection of the two-dimensional reaction coordinate comprising the Marcus outer-sphere electron transfer reaction coordinate (i.e., solvent polarization) and the interparticle distance. Details can be found in ref (27). The blue and red arrows indicate the (radiative) decay processes of either the locally excited state or the exciplex that are observed in the experiment. The presented scheme is a unification of two reaction schemes suggested by Weller et al. in refs (28)–30.
