Erythrocytes were pretreated with or without 5βCD or 20 µM cytochalasin D for 30 minutes at 4°C, then S. pneumoniae cells were added and incubated for 1 hour at 37°C in a 5% CO₂ atmosphere. The numbers of invaded bacteria were determined as described in the Experimental Procedures section. The experiments were performed 3 times and data shown represent the mean of 6 wells from a representative experiment. S.D. values are represented by vertical lines. *P<0.005; **P<0.05.
