Protein aggregation in C. jejuni treated with BITC. Cells were grown to mid-log phase in DMEM–20 mM pyruvate at 37°C under microaerobic conditions before the addition of 2 mg liter⁻¹ BITC or 5 mg liter⁻¹ BITC. Alternatively, cells were exposed to ethanol (E) for 2 h as a negative control. Aggregated proteins were isolated by using a method described previously by Tomoyasu et al. (36) and then analyzed on a 12% (wt/vol)-acrylamide SDS-PAGE gel, followed by Coomassie staining (37). Aggregated proteins and total proteins were quantified with a BCA assay (Thermo Scientific).
