Effects of glucose and Δcrp mutation on C8-HSL accumulation. C8-HSL was extracted and estimated from cultures of ES114, the Δcrp mutant JB24, or the ainS mutant NL60. The C8-HSL synthase mutant NL60 serves as a negative control. Cultures were grown to an OD595 of 2.4 to 2.5 in SWTO either amended with 20 mM glucose or left unamended, as indicated. C8-HSL levels were determined by bioassays of ethyl acetate-extracted cultures, and bars indicate standard errors (n = 3).
