Changes in concentrations of soluble zinc (◆), iron (▾), aluminium (▵) and manganese (○), and numbers of planktonic‐phase bacteria (Inline graphic) in bioreactor I during the second phase of operation. The feed liquor was a synthetic mine water based on the chemical composition of a stream draining the abandoned Mynydd Parys copper mine in north Wales. The arrows indicate the points at which: (a) the glycerol concentration in the feed liquor was lowered from 3 mM to 0.7 mM; (b) the yeast extract concentration was lowered from 0.01% to 0.005% (w/v); (c) the ferrous iron was increased from 5 mM to 10 mM.
