(A) Schematic of the standard model used throughout the study showing the spatial dimensions of the soma and dendrite. The soma and proximal part of the dendrite had passive membrane properties while the distal, dendritic end (gray) had voltage-dependent h-conductances. (B) The somatic input impedance of a passive neuron (gray) demonstrated low-pass behavior. When h-conductances were added to the soma (magenta curve), this resulted in a band-pass filtered response. (C) If the h-conductances were located in the distal dendritic end as in panel (A), a resonance was observed in the dendritic input impedance (blue curve), but was not detectable somatically (red curve). Thin curves in panels (B) and (C) correspond to numerical results from the full nonlinear model (see Methods).
