AGEs formation by oxidation of FFA. Hydroxyl radical abducts a hydrogen in the bis-allylic sp3 carbon of the conjugated lipid, forms a carbon radical and thereafter, in the presence of oxygen, a peroxyl radical that is reduced with another FFA to form a lipid peroxide, cyclizes and generates a cyclic peroxide, which in the presence of oxygen suffers breakage with formation of glyoxal, which reacts with lysine forming CML.
