(A) The traditional way of modeling sodium increase due to ion channel activity and diffusion in NEURON, excerpted from the model of Fleidervish et al. (2010). The core of the calculation (red) mixes the geometry and the modeling. To make a fair comparison, Figure 3A.ses has been modified from the original version which used four lines of automatically generated code to insert the nadifl mechanism. (B) In the rxd approach, the code is shorter and clearer as less connectivity code is needed and as rxd automatically handles ion influx and the effects of geometry on diffusion.
