Table 3.

Volume fraction (%) of tissue components in porous biphasic hydroxyapatite (HA)/β tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) implanted in 16 calvarial defects of 4 adult baboons and harvested 90 and 365 days after implantation

Time Biomimetic Matrices HA/β-TCP Bone Matrix FVA

4/96 HA/β-TCP 39.7 ±3.5 21.6 ±1.3 38.7 ±2.5
365 19/81 HA/β-TCP 53.7 ±3.4 26.6 ± 2.4 19.7 ±2.7

Volume fractions (%) of tissue components in orthotopic calvarial specimens were calculated with a calibrated Zeiss Integration Platte II with 100 lattice points superimposed over five sources selected for histomorphometry in each section as described in ‘Materials and methods’. Values are given as means ± SEM of 4 specimens per treatment modality representing two animals per observation period. *P< 0.05 versus19/81 on day 90 and 365.
