Effects of the mutated MetE enzymes on E. coli growth in the presence of weak organic acids. The WE (filled circles), WE-214 (open circles), WE-CA (filled triangles), and WE-214A (open triangles) strains were incubated in M9 glucose medium (pH 6.0) supplemented with 20 mM sodium acetate (a) or 10 mM sodium propionate (b) in an automatic growth-measuring incubator at 37°C for 28 h.
