SiNPs are a multimodal contrast agent for SCT. (A) Cardiac SCT uses hMSCs loaded ex vivo with nanoparticles, which consist of silica (SiO2) framework that backscatters ultrasound (black waves) and stabilizes Gd3+ and FITC fluorophores. (B) The ultrasound signals for 0.5 mg of different-sized SiNPs in an agarose phantom are shown at 40 and 16 MHz. Inset, batch-to-batch variability in ultrasound signal of 5 mg of SiNPs. (C) The size distribution within the 299-nm batch size selected from (B) had a mode size of 300 nm via TEM. Inset, TEM image of SiNPs. (D) DLS of the 299-nm batch.
