N fluxes (size indicated by vertical arrows) and isotope fractionation during anammox. Anammox converts ammonium and nitrite to nitrate and dinitrogen according to the approximate stoichiometry 1.3 NO2 + 1 NH4+ → 1 N2 + 0.3 NO3 + 2 H2O and exchanges N isotopes between nitrite and nitrate to a variable degree. The isotope effects (ε) that correspond to these N fluxes determined in this study are indicated.
