Anammox converts ammonium and nitrite to nitrate and dinitrogen according to the approximate stoichiometry 1.3 NO2− + 1 NH4+ → 1 N2 + 0.3 NO3− + 2 H2O and exchanges N isotopes between nitrite and nitrate to a variable degree.
