Whole-mount in situ hybridization on axolotl full-thickness excisional skin wounds was performed to look at the expression of four different genes known to be expressed early in mammalian wounds. An early time course for the expression of TGF-β1, Krox-24, Msx-1, and Hsp-70 shows the expression of the messenger RNA (view is from the above the wounds). Dotted circles indicate the area of skin that was removed for the wounds with the dorsal side on top for each panel. The expression of each gene is shown at 30 min, 2, 6, and 24 h postwounding (the expression appears in dark around the circle). The wounds were done on the side of the tail at the midlevel with a 1.5-mm punch to excise a full-thickness piece of skin.
