The L–R pattering is caused at the node by an early breaking of bilateral symmetry. The nodal gene is essential in this function and the midline acts as a physical and molecular barrier to determine correct side-specific gene expression. The leftward Nodal flow (arrow) transport to the left wall of the node the nodal vesicular parcels.
