Nitrite (NO2), and nitrate (NO3) can treat PAH via biotransformation into nitric oxide (NO), a potent vasodilator. The nitrate-nitrite-NO pathway dominates under hypoxia (blue lung), and the arginine-NO pathway under normoxia (red lung).
