In this and all other experiments, protein levels were determined by SDS-PAGE followed by quantitative immunoblotting. σ³² activity was determined from a chromosomal β-galactosidase reporter (calculated as a differential rate of synthesis); values presented are from ≥3 experiments. Relative S.A. of σ³² is defined as: [(σ³² activity/σ³² level) normalized to σ³² S.A. of WT cells grown at 30°C].

The ftsY ⁺ plasmid inhibits growth of the cells by ∼30%.
