Before 12 hpf, Fgf3 and Fgf8 specify cells of the posterior placodal area that will give rise to the otic and EB placodes. Shortly after, between 14 and 22 hpf, Fgf10a, expressed by the anterior lateral line precursors and the forming otic vesicle, and Fgf3, expressed by the endoderm, are required for EB placode development by promoting the expression of Pax2a and Sox3 in a subset of cells of the Foxi1+ placodal competent ectoderm. By 24 hpf, EB placodes are fully developed.
