Asterisks denote hypersensitive sites flanking the TFIIIC-protected box B in chromatin, but not in naked DNA. The 3′ end of the primer extension probe was located 174 bp from the 3′ end of box B, complementary to the top strand, and was also used for the sequencing ladder.
