Phylogenetic relationships between the AID/APOBEC proteins and LINE retrotransposon families in various vertebrates. The scheme shows different clusters of AID/APOBEC family members identified in various vertebrates and LINE retrotransposons present in their genomes. The genomes and/or AID/APOBEC proteins analyzed in this study are marked green, and the absence of A5 protein in platypus and birds is marked with a grey line. The presence of the only A1 homologs identified in non-mammalian genomes so far, green anole lizard and zebra finch A1 proteins, is marked with an orange line. Data was derived from previous studies [18,20-34]. One unit on the timeline represents 100 million years. MYA, millions years ago.
