Estradiol-treated ovariectomized rats (RYGB-E2) eat less (B) and gain less weight (A) after Roux-en-Y gastric-bypass surgery (RYGB) than untreated ovariectomized rats (RYGB-OIL), and these effects of estradiol were similar to those in rats with sham RYGB surgeries (SHAM-E2 and SHAM-OIL). Rats were fed solid, high-energy diet for 3 wk preoperatively (phase 1) and for 4 wk postoperatively (phase 2); they were then fed Ensure Plus liquid diet for 3 wk (phase 3). #SHAM-OIL significantly different from RYGB-OIL; *RYGB-OIL significantly different from RYGB-E2; +SHAM-OIL significantly different from RYGB-E2, all P < 0.05.
