Examples of Questions used during Interviews

  1. For HIV-negative: Do you know anyone who has HIV/AIDS?

    For HIV-positive: Do you know anyone else who has HIV/AIDS?
    1. IF YES: who do you know who has HIV/AIDS and what are their relationships to you?
    2. How did you find out s/he has HIV/AIDS?
    3. [for HIV+] How has this made you think about your HIV?
    4. [for HIV−] How has this made you think about your risk of HIV?
  2. Have you ever had a Sexually Transmitted Infection (or STI, something like herpes, syphilis, gonorrhea, warts, etc.)? What were your thoughts when you learned you had an STI?

  3. Think about women that you know. What do you think places them at risk for catching HIV?
    1. What about STIs?
  4. What do you think has put you at risk for getting HIV in the past?
    1. What do you think will put you at risk in the future?
    2. What about STIs? What do you think has put you at risk for getting them in the past?
  5. We are all very different. We want to understand the different types of situations that people find themselves in when they have sex. Please think about when you’ve had sex in the 6 months prior to your incarceration.
    1. Who did you usually have sex with? Where did you have sex? How was the sex initiated? (Have them tell the story – probe gender, age, who said what to whom, etc.)
    2. Which times did you use a condom? With which partners?
    3. How often did you not use a condom? With which partners?
    4. What made it easy to use a condom?
    5. What made it difficult?
    6. Tell me about any other people you think s/he was having sex with.
    7. Tell me about any other methods you used to protect yourself against HIV/STIs. How about against pregnancy?
    8. Did you ever use drugs before, during, or after sex? Which one? Tell me about how getting high has affected your sex life.
  6. Tell me about the most committed relationship you have had during the past six months.
    1. Do you live together?
    2. Do you see other people?
    3. Do you feel as if you want to be with this person? Does he or she want to be with you?
