These pictures demonstrate the effect of 5×10−7 M retinoic treatment at stage 13 of Xenopus laevis. Animals were sacrificed at stage 40, embedded in paraffin, and serially sectioned. (A) Note that the ear is reduced to an otocyst vesicle (O) but nevertheless forms numerous ganglion neurons (G) that delaminate from this reduced otocyst. (B) As with the ear, the morphogenesis of the eyes can be completely blocked by RA treatment, leading to the formation of retina receptors (R) facing into the third ventricle (III) of the diencephalons (D).
