The T. onnurineus FHL complex is active in vivo in P. furiosus. Growth (as measured by soluble cell protein, A and E), H₂ produced per liter of culture (B and F), formate in spent medium (C and G), and culture pH (D and H) of MW004 cultured in the absence (blue diamonds) or presence (yellow squares) of 50 mm formate compared with MW144 in the absence (red triangles) or presence (green circles) of 50 mm formate, at 80 °C (A–D) or 95 °C (E–H) in medium supplemented with 5 g of maltose, 0.5 g of tryptone, and 1× vitamin mixture per liter.
