Oxygen requirements of prokaryotes with the MQ and UQ biosynthetic pathways. Most prokaryotes containing enzymes MenFBC of the classical MK pathway were aerobic or facultative. However, 27.3% of the prokaryotes containing enzymes MqnACD of the futalosine pathway were anaerobic. Thus, the majority of MKs in anaerobic prokaryotes was biosynthesized via the futalosine pathway.
