Potential interactions of antifreeze proteins on ice crystal surfaces. Antifreeze proteins (non-blue objects) bind to two major planes: prism and basal plane. Location of binding is dependent on the protein characteristics. Antifreeze proteins bound to the prism plane inhibit ice growth along the α-axes, but when bound to the basal plane c-axis ice growth is inhibited. Adapted from Kawahara [1].
