Schematic diagram of ice binding using an ice-like hydration layer (MpAFP retrieved from RCSB Protein Data Bank). Anchored clathrate waters in the troughs of the ice binding surface orders the hydration layer to become ice-like. This hydration layer become an ice template allowing binding to ice crystal surfaces. The ice binding surface of the antifreeze protein is highlighted in red using pyMOL.
