Table 4. Relationship between perceived vascular abnormality and overall plus disease diagnosis.

Experts were asked to review wide-angle retinal images in detail, provide an overall diagnosis (plus, pre-plus, or neither), characterize arterial tortuosity (AT, sufficient or insufficient for plus disease), and characterize venous dilation (VD, sufficient or insufficient for plus disease). Shaded cells represent inconsistencies between expert diagnostic process and published definitions. Six experts reviewed 7 wide-angle images, for a total of 42 ratings. Five ratings were excluded because experts provided no response for AT or VD.

Sufficient AT or VD for plus disease?
Diagnosis Both AT and VD Only AT Only VD Neither AT nor VD
Plus 15/37 5/37 0/37 0/37
Pre-Plus 5/37 3/37 3/37 0/37
Neither 0/37 3/37 1/37 2/37
