Frequency of a monocyte CD163⁺ cell type with immunosuppressive function. The fraction of monocytes with high CD163 expression (CD163⁺⁺) was determined by flow cytometry using peripheral blood from six patients with septic shock and ten healthy controls. The dot plots are gated on CD14⁺ monocytes (for the gates, see the left dot plots). The demographics did not differ significantly compared with all the patients with septic shock (according to mean age and sex ratio).
