Frequency of a monocyte CD163+ cell type with immunosuppressive function. The fraction of monocytes with high CD163 expression (CD163++) was determined by flow cytometry using peripheral blood from six patients with septic shock and ten healthy controls. The dot plots are gated on CD14+ monocytes (for the gates, see the left dot plots). The demographics did not differ significantly compared with all the patients with septic shock (according to mean age and sex ratio). The right dot plots (CD163 vs. HLA-DR) show a variable HLA-DR expression in the CD163++ monocyte population. HC healthy controls. ***p < 0.001
