Double immunofluorescent staining for iNOS and ASMA (pericyte marker) was performed, followed by the TUNEL assay with TMR red on the same frozen sections. Increased iNOS and TUNEL-positive cells were observed in diabetic mice retinas (small and large arrows). These signals co-localized with ASMA-positive pericytes (thick arrows).
