Effects of hemolysis on platelet activation. The percent decrease in platelet count increased with hemolysis from whole blood (WB), represented by Hb concentration (black squares) (r = 0.6659, p < 0.01). Addition of 2 U/ml apyrase prior to shear reduced the change in platelet count due to hemolysis (gray diamonds) (r=−0.0819, n = 8 different volunteers, tested twice).
